Una escena que tenemos relativamente cerca es la escena francesa, de allí, podemos nombrar a infinididad de grupos si sois como yo, si curioso y buscador de nuevos sonidos, y con ello me topé con ésta oportunidad de entrevistar a un grupo que ha dado mucho que hablar y que después de mucho curro, están viendo cual es su recompensa, una aceptación bastante buena, os hablo de Lion´s Law que están presentando su último trabajo, “The Pain, The Blood & The Sword”, pasen y lean.

Para empezar y para quien no os conozca, ¿quiénes están detrás de Lion´s Law? y sobretodo, ¿qué os hace diferentes a las demás bandas que solemos escuchar?

Lion’s Law es una banda Punk/Oi! de Paris compuesta por 5 miembros. Empezamos a tocar en 2012 y hemos sufrido algunos cambios en la formación. Actualmente la banda la componen Louis y Daick a las guitarras (solista y rítmica), Swann al bajo, Thomas a la batería y yo, Wattie, como cantante. Además de ser un grupo compuesto amigos que llevamos mucho tocando junto, cada miembro participa en Diferentes proyectos musicales, por lo que, y desde hace mucho ya, todos estamos muy involucrados en la escena Oi! Francesa.

En plena pandemia mundial, sacáis vuestro disco “The Pain, The Blood & The Sword” un disco lleno de trallazos y además grabado en un estudio español más que conocido como es Estudios Costa Brava bajo la batuta de Santi García y Borja Pérez, en otra entrevista, comentabais que fue por “culpa” del sonido que tenía el último trabajo de Crim, pero aparte de eso, ¿qué fue lo que os convenció en grabar allí?

La historia es que nos gustó mucho el sonido (y, por supuesto, el contenido) del último álbum de Crim, por lo que le preguntamos a HFMN (nuestro representantes) dónde fue grabado. Nos hablaron de Estudios Costa Brava y nos dijeron qué hasta ¡son amigos! Con esta sorpresa, ya se hizo obvio que grabáramos allí ya que Santi y Borja hicieron un gran trabajo con Crim y otras muchas bandas. Y, por cierto, queremos decir que estamos muy contentos con el resultado que hemos obtenido y que nos lo pasamos muy bien trabajando allí.

Desde que sacarais vuestro primer trabajo en 2012, han pasado ocho años y cinco trabajos con éste, algo que suelo preguntar es ¿creíais que ibais a cosechar el éxito que tenéis ahora mismo? ¿con que os quedáis de todo éstos años de música?

La verdad es que somos una banda bastante productiva a nivel compositivo, y sobretodo a nivel de girar y hacer tours. Nosotros no esperábamos nada más aparte de poder llegar a tocar en el extranjero. Aunque hemos tocado en otras bandas que cantaban en francés con anterioridad, Lion’s Law ha sido la primera banda donde cantamos nuestras letras en inglés, lo que nos ayuda a salir y tocar fuera de Francia. Pero como decimos, no nos esperábamos esto. También pensamos que la banda vio la luz en el momento preciso: la escena Oi! no disponía de sangre nueva aparte de las bandas de siempre y sus temas de toda la vida. Y fue en ese momento y de esta necesidad cuando llegamos nosotros.

Por supuesto que nuestros planes se han visto jodidos por las crisis del COVID. Jamás hubiéramos podido imaginar lo que iba a durar… Por el momento hemos pospuesto todos los Tours que teníamos anunciados y hemos planeado presentar el álbum en 2021. ¡Esperemos que la cosa esté mejor para entonces!!

Siendo una banda parisina, optáis por cantar en inglés, pero de unos años para acá, también metéis canciones en francés, ¿por qué no cantar en vuestra lengua materna? ¿vuestros fans de vuestro estado os piden más canciones en francés?

Como hemos comentado antes, todos nosotros habíamos participado en bandas que cantaban en francés (Maraboots y Street Kids) por o que queríamos conseguir sonar diferente. Por eso decidimos cantar en inglés en Lion’s Law. Pero sí, lleváis razón. El tiempo pasa y nuestro amigos y fans franceses nos suplican por temas en francés!!!. Hemos hecho caso a las peticiones porque al fin y al cabo somos todos fans de Oi! francés de los 80, cantado en francés por supuesto. Por eso, empezado a componer canciones cantadas en francés. En cada álbum hay un poquito ya y tenemos pensado ir añadiendo más… Y hasta aquí puedo leer!

Me viene a la cabeza algo que no tengo oportunidad de preguntar muchas veces, siendo parisinos, ¿qué bandas nos recomendaríais que escucháramos de vuestra ciudad?

La escena Oi! francesa está muy activa en la actualidad y cuando con muchas bandas de calidad, sobretodo en París. Aunque haya muchas bandas que merezcan ser mencionadas os recomiendo que escuchéis la nueva banda que tenemos en la ciudad: Récidive. Su maqueta es muy buena.

Aún así, aquí tenéis mi Top 3 de bandas francesas: Camera Silens, Bombadiers y Survet Skins.

Otra cosa que me sorprendió, es ver que tenéis de oficina a una oficina catalana como es HFMN Crew, ¿cómo surge ésta unión? ¿Qué podéis decirnos de ellos?

Todo ha ido a mejor desde que empezamos a trabajar con HFMN. Hemos tocado mucho en Estraperlo (Club del Ritmo) con los años y nos hemos hecho amigos de David y de la gente de HFMN. La banda se empezó a hacer más y más grande y empezó a ser difícil poder llevar todo para adelante por nosotros solos: buscar conciertos, hablar con lugares, organizar tours, componer, grabar… Sencillamente no nos daba el tiempo para todo y nos sentíamos abrumados. Hemos sido capaces de autogestionarnos por 6 años, pero finalmente hemos necesitado ayuda y HFMN nos ha ayudado increíblemente

No sé qué pensaréis vosotros, pero creo que dentro de la escena dónde nos movemos, ¿puede haber un auge del StreetPunk? ¿qué pensáis de ello?

Pienso que por culpa de algunas bandas que se envuelven en los clichés del Oi! (oioioi clase obrera, botas y tirantes, oi oi peleas en las calles) la gente se aburrió del género. Sin embargo, estamos ante una nueva ola que es mucho más rica y cautivadora, donde confluye una gran mezcla de diferentes estilos como son Hardcore, Punk y Oi! y donde las preocupaciones por las diferencias sociales se abordan y enfocan de manera diferente e interesante. Todo esto ayuda a que la gente vuelva a sentir curiosidad y prestar atención con nuevas expectativas.

Lion's Law is 5 piece Punk / Oi! Band from Paris. We're playing together 2012 and since the beginning we went thru a few lineup changes but the band is right now: Louis (lead guitar), Thomas (Drums) , Swann (Bass) , Daick (rythm guitar) and me , Wattie (Vocals). We're all Friends that used to make bands together for ever and still play in different other projects, we're all involved in the French Oi! Scene since .. a long Time!

Your new album The Pain, The Blood & The Sword was released in the middle of a Global Pandemic. The album is full of powerful hits and was recorded in Estudios Costa Brava (Spain) with Santi García & Borja Pérez - by the way, it was said on a previous interview that you “find both guilty” of bringing Crim such a sound on their last album. Regardless, how did you decide to work with Costa Brava?

Well, the story is that we all really loved the Sound (and of course the content) of CRIM's latest album , and when i asked HFMN (our label) where it was recorded , they told us about that studio and that they were good Friends ! What a good surprise, it then became easy and obvious that we'll be recording there as Santi and Borja made an Amazing job with CRIM and many other bands ! By the way , we're really happy about the result of our recording there , and we had such a good Time !!

Lion’s Law released 5 albums in the last 8 years (your first album was released in 2012). At this point, I always make the same question: Did you ever imagine your current success? Which are the better experiences you have been through?

We're a really productive band in terms of recordings and even more in terms of touring! We never expected anything apart from playing abroad. We did bands together before but in French language, when we started Lion's Law it was our first English-speaking band and obviously it'll help us tour outside of France. But we never expected so much!!! I think we started the band at the right Time too, a Time when the Oi! Scene didn't have no young Blood, only old bands playing songs from their first album. The scene needed something fresh and we kicked the door down right on Time.

We have so many good memories about touring the whole World, Japan , Brazil , Chile , Colombia , USA , Singapore .. that's pretty crazy !!! Even more for a French Oi! Band!

Of course , our plans got fucked up By COVID crisis , and we never imagined it lasting that much … for the moment we re-scheduled every tour we had planned for the album release to 2021 . Let's just Hope it'll be over By then !!

As a true Parisian band, you usually choose to write and sing your songs in English. However, you have recently started to write and sing in French too. Why did you decide not to perform in your mother tongue? Are your fans asking you for more stuff in the French language?

As i said before, when we started the band , we all had French-singing bands (Maraboots and Street Kids) , so we wanted something different , so it won't Sound the same . That's why Lion's Law is an English-singing band. However you're right, Time goes By and our French Friends and fans were begging for French songs !!! We rather envoyed the request, because we're all fans of 80's french Oi! , In French language obviously. So we started writing and recording some French-singing songs. Every album there's more of it and … we're planning to add more of it later on! I won't Say more!

Is there any other band from Paris that you would like to share with us? Tell us about your top 3 of French Bands.

The french Oi! Scene is really active right now with a lot of good bands, even more in Paris ! So there's a lot of bands worth mentioning! I'd recommend you to listen to the newest band in town: Récidive ! Their démo is really good !

I was surprised that you are working with HFMN Crew from Catalonia. How did you get in contact with them? What can you tell us about?

Everything changed for the better for us since we started working with HFMN. We've been playing a lot at Estraperlo the past few years and became Friends with David of HFMN and the crew. We , as a band , got bigger and bigger and we had a hard Time managing the band ourselves : Booking , writing , touring , recording . We were lacking time and were overwhelmed . We managed ourselves for the first 6 years but then we needed help, HFMN are handling it like kings!

Will the StreetPunk Genre become more relevant within the Underground Scene? What do you think about?

I think that because of a few bands being really ultra-cliché Oi! Bands (oioioi working class, boots and braces, oi oi fighting in the Streets) , people got bored of the genre. However the New wave is way more interesting, mixing a few styles like hardcore, punk and Oi! , Talking about different society concerns and subjects in a way more interesting way. People are getting back to it and seeing it with a new point of view.
